Kherai dance of Bodos


Kherai (To bow down in prayer) is a bodo religious dance and is essential part of Bathow worship. It is related to Kherai festival and is ritual in nature.  There are 18 main types of Kherai dances, divided into two types, namely Primary Kherai dance and Secondary Kherai dance.  Kherai’s main dances are Dahal Thungri Sibnai, chagwlao Bwnai, Khwijema Phonai, Gandula Bwnnai, Thungri Gongnwi Sibnai, Khwmayao Barkhwnai, Badali Birnai, Mwsou gelenai, Bathou Gidingnai, Nao bhasainai,  Mainao Borainai, Mwsha Gelenai.  The secondary Kherai dances include Deodini Wngkharnai, Laijam Baonai, Bathou Tharnai, Jarafagla, Thenthamali, Charanisla, Neolai Mwsanai, Langtha Gurji, Dawang Bathua, etc. 



 In "Dahal Thungri Sibnai" dance priestess (Doudini) holds a sword in her right hand and a shield in her left hand while dancing.  Haba Janai's dance is related to the wedding ceremony.  The "Raijw Janai" dance is performed according to the daily life style of Bodos.  During the Spring Festival there will be a "Baisagu" dance.  "Bagurumba" dance is one of Bodos' most attractive dances.  This is a beautiful and charming dance full of rhythm and vitality.  Sometimes, dancers give the impression of a butterfly fluttering.  Since 1957, Bagulumba has been recognized as the national dance of India.
