Upendra Nath Brahma




Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma was born on  31 March, 1956 at Boragari village near Dotma in the District of Kokrajhar. His Father's name is Monglaram Brahma and mother's name is Lefsri Brahma. From 1963, Brahma studied at various schools, including Dotma High School, Kokrajhar High School and in 1973 at Sakti Ashram High and Vocational School under the guidance of Swamiji. In 1975, he passed the matriculation examination in the first division with letter marks in Mathematics. Thereafter he obtained a BSc with honours degree in Physics from Cotton College gauhati.He completed his M.Sc. from Guwahati University. In 1984, he joined as an Income Tax Inspector at the office of the Income Tax Department, Panbazar. But he soon resigned from the government service because he wanted to devote himself towards working for his community. Financial problems compelled him to join the Nehru Vocational High School where he worked as a science teacher till the middle of 1986.
He became the president of the Goalpara Bodo Student's Union from 1978 to 1979. From 1981 he was served as a Vice President of the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU).  And on May 31, 1986 He was elected as the 8th president of ABSU. After becoming president of ABSU, he toured the North-East and interacted with students, social workers of different communities and discussed with them their various problems. He decided to launch a large-scale movement for the independent United Territory and organized gatherings and rallies at the regional headquarters and other places.
On June 12, 1987 a huge mass rally was organized in the judge field in Guwahati. Where ABSU demanded for partition of Assam on fifty-fifty basis. Again On July 21, 1987 mass religious prayers were organized and the ABSU activists took a vow - 'Do or Die' for a separate state. Bodofa said that the demand for a separate state was- "Legitimized by constitutional sanction through the provision of Articles 2, 3 and 4 of Indian Constitution and backed by historical basis". 
Upendra Nath Brahma On November 8, 1988 the "Bodo Peoples Action Committee" (BPAC) was formed under the initiative of UN Brahma. He was re- elected as the President of ABSU at its twentieth annual conference held at Banshbari in Dhubri district. He always believed that the spread of education among the Bodos would make them progressive. 
He was also a very good writer. He was elected as the editor of 'Bidangsri', a mouth piece of the Bodo Students Union in 1977 to 1978. In 1980, he edited the news magazine 'Orkhi', weekly news paper 'The Bodoland Times' and wrote a book named 'Why Separate State'. His writings bore traces of his mental maturity and boosted the spirit of his community. He realized that the Bodos needed talented writers to put Bodo literature at "par excellence with the world literature". He felt that only a community with a developed language and literature could keep pace with the fast changing world.
Upendra Nath Brahma knew that the press could play an important role in making the struggles of the Bodos known to the outside world During the movement, he himself freely interacted with the press. Bodofa's ideals and principles will always be a source of inspiration for his people. "To love the Bodos is my duty, to work for the Bodos is my responsibility",- these were the words of the young, charismatic and visionary leader of the Bodos whose memory will always be cherished.
He gave the last lead in the fifth tripartite discussion on the Bodoland movement held on April 18, 1990. On May 1, 1990, he breathed his last in Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, Mumbai. Therefore, the most practical leader of the Bodos left his heaven unto the dream of the Bodos remained incomplete.
